Policy Progress: AmCham Ukraine Signed Memorandum on Implementation of National Medicines Verification System in Ukraine

The American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine (AmCham), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, pharmaceutical associations, and other professional organizations, signed the Memorandum of Mutual Understanding and Cooperation. It marks a crucial step toward the implementation of the national medicines verification organization (NMVO) and the system in Ukraine.

Implementation of the medicines verification system is an important tool for preventing and combating the threat of counterfeit medicines and ensuring that every Ukrainian citizen has access to safe treatments.

Implementation of NMVO is provided for in Article 57 of the new Law of Ukraine "On Medicinal Products". Moreover, this system should be harmonized and built on the European model of and should be connected to the centralized European database of medicines verification for its effective operation.

Together with the AmCham the following associations signed the Memorandum:

  • All-Ukrainian Pharmaceutical Chamber
  • All-Ukrainian Pharmaceutical Union "PHARMUKRAINA"
  • Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufactures
  • Association of Medicines Manufacturers of Ukraine
  • Association of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (APRaD)
  • European Business Association
  • Indian Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association
  • Professional Pharmacy Association of Ukraine
  • Union of Organizations of Employers of the Medical and Microbiological Industry of Ukraine
  • Union of Ukrainian Entrepreneurs

The next steps are the finalization and adoption of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolution that regulates the issue of verification of medicinal products as well as creation of an organization and communication with the European Commission regarding joining the European database.

We are grateful to all the AmCham members’ experts for their significant contribution.

Also, we would like to express gratitude to the USAID project "SAFEMed" for their technical expertise and expert support.

AmCham will continue to work on these strategic issues to ensure the safety of medicines and accelerate integration with the European Union.
