BDO in Ukraine on Techtonic States: How Businesses Shape, Build, Protect and Strengthen Competitive Advantage Amid Change

BDO in Ukraine on Techtonic States: How Businesses Shape, Build, Protect and Strengthen Competitive Advantage Amid Change

In response to ongoing changes in the global environment, the BDO network has introduced the Techtonic States research series, which provides a comprehensive analysis of how companies are transforming their approaches to competitiveness.

The four sections of the report create a holistic picture: from understanding resilience as a foundational characteristic to scaling innovation with measurable impact.

The first section — defines the foundation of modern competitiveness. 61% of executives consider resilience a key business attribute, emphasizing that it is not only about the ability to withstand crises, but also about readiness to grow amid uncertainty. Companies are investing in AI, data and a risk-oriented culture; however, only 42% feel ready for the full-scale use of artificial intelligence.

The second section — focuses on the practical implementation of transformation. The research shows that 57% of companies are accelerating AI adoption, but only 49% have a clear strategy for its use. Alignment between business and IT strategies, data modernization, and workforce capability development emerge as key success factors. As a result, digital transformation goes beyond technology and becomes a management priority.

In the third section — the focus shifts to risk. 76% of executives expect cyber threats to increase, while almost half are holding back AI investments due to data security concerns. At the same time, only 21% of companies invest in workforce reskilling. The conclusion is clear: integrating risk management, cybersecurity and ethical principles into digital strategies becomes a critical condition for long-term resilience.

The final, fourth section is dedicated to scaling innovation and strengthening competitive advantage. It demonstrates that responsible growth requires a clear strategic vision, ESG integration and measurable outcomes. In particular, 63% of executives emphasize the critical role of selecting the right partners for innovation. Organizations that align technological development with business goals and sustainability principles are able to achieve stable long-term growth.

Thus, the Techtonic States research shows that competitive advantage is no longer a static asset. It is formed as a dynamic system based on four interconnected elements:

  • resilience as a strategic foundation
  • aligned digital transformation
  • proactive risk management
  • responsible scaling of innovation

It is precisely the companies that are able to synchronize these components that gain a real advantage in a fragmented and fast-changing world.

For Ukrainian businesses, these conclusions are particularly relevant in conditions of high uncertainty, multiple risks, and the need for rapid adaptation to change. Companies that are already investing in data security, AI and risk management are laying the foundation for recovery and growth in a post-crisis environment. At the same time, the integration of ESG approaches and strategic planning is becoming an important prerequisite for attracting investment.
