Ukrainian Energy Exchange – 15 Years of Competitive Markets and Trading Innovations

On March 15, the Ukrainian Energy Exchange (UEEX) celebrates its 15th anniversary! Established in 2010, UEEX has become a leading platform for organizing and conducting trading in energy resources and commodities, ensuring market transparency and efficiency.

Over the last 15 years, Ukraine’s exchange-traded commodity market has undergone significant transformations. In the early 2010s, energy trading was predominantly based on long-term contracts without sufficient competition, and market price formation mechanisms were quite limited. The absence of transparent instruments for the purchase and sale of energy resources led to significant corruption risks and inefficient resource allocation.

The creation of the Ukrainian Energy Exchange was the first step towards building an open and competitive organized market. The launch of electronic trading on the UEEX enabled participants to receive fair prices based on real market conditions. The implementation of the new version of the Law of Ukraine “On Capital Markets and Organized Commodity Markets” in 2021 was an important step towards reforming and improving exchange activities.

UEEX has been actively promoting the development of the exchange-traded commodity market by introducing modern technologies and practices. The exchange provides electronic trading in a wide range of energy resources, including electricity, natural gas, liquefied gas, oil, oil products, coal and untreated timber. This allows market participants to minimize financial and production risks associated with securing the necessary resources.

Today, more than 6,400 companies of various sizes operate on the UEEX platform: manufacturers, state-owned enterprises, traders, suppliers, etc.

In 2024, in order to further develop and improve the clearing component of exchange trading, follow modern European experience, increase transparency and reliability of trading, as well as create additional opportunities for market participants, UEEX established a subsidiary company, Ukrainian Clearing House LLC. The UEEX also started providing services for aggregating and providing the NEURC with information on economic and trade transactions carried out by market participants related to wholesale energy products under REMIT. These steps help to increase the efficiency and transparency of exchange operations.

“We are proud that over 15 years of operation, the UEEX has become an integral part of Ukraine’s energy sector. Our commitment to transparency, innovation and efficiency has allowed us to create a reliable platform for trading electricity and energy resources. We are grateful to our members, authorities, regulators and partners for their trust and will continue to work on the development of the Ukrainian exchange market, as UEEX is a team of true professionals and patriots of the state,” said Oleksii Dubovskyi, Chairman of the UEEX Exchange Committee.

The Ukrainian Energy Exchange continues its journey, contributing to the development and stability of Ukraine’s energy sector, implementing leading practices and technologies for sustainable economic development of Ukraine as a result of building transparent, reliable and competitive exchange markets in line with the strategic priorities of Ukraine and Ukrainian energy development and its integration into EU markets with the possibility of strengthening the country’s energy security.
