Recirculated aquaculture system (RAS) in Ukraine – NIRAS and SMART TECH INDUSTRY

In a notable example of innovation and collaboration, NIRAS and SMART TECH INDUSTRY (STI) have commenced a project to improve aquaculture in Ukraine. This partnership highlights the potential of advanced technology and a mutual commitment to sustainability.

A modern recirculated aquaculture system as an environmentally-conscious alternative

The initiative began with STI setting out to envision a modern recirculated aquaculture system (RAS) to produce trout – in this case, big red trout/steelhead salmon, as a substitute for Atlantic salmon in the local Ukrainian market. Recognising the project's potential, STI enlisted the expertise of NIRAS, known for its solutions in land-based fish farming and vast experience working with Aquaculture, both land and sea based. With NIRAS's know-how and STI's vision, the collaboration was set in motion.

Sustainability is a key focus in the project. Both NIRAS and STI acknowledge the ecological impact of traditional sea-based fish farming and the necessity of adopting more sustainable practices. Land-based fish farming, particularly using RAS technology, offers an effective and environmentally-conscious alternative. This system optimises nutrient use and water reuse, reducing discharge and safeguarding the natural environment.

For NIRAS, the partnership with STI is an opportunity to enhance its competences and services in land-based fish farming. By integrating expertise and technology from Aqua-Partners ApS, NIRAS has strengthened its ability to design and engineer complex aquaculture systems. This combination of knowledge and resources allows NIRAS to provide comprehensive solutions, ensuring the success and sustainability of STI's project in Ukraine.

Focus on logistics and biology to secure optimal conditions

The collaboration focuses on the logistics and biological needs of trout production. The state of the art aquaculture system design is aligned with the growth patterns and behaviours of the fish, promoting optimal conditions for their health. This thorough planning spans all aspects of the project, ensuring financial and environmental sustainability.

One key aspect is the commitment to developing a robust, sustainable, and cost-effective production system, one in which 99% of all water used is recirculated. The project aims to produce market-sized trout in various sizes, with an initial target of 400 tonnes annually. This scalable approach allows for future expansion, meeting increasing demand without compromising sustainability.

A joint commitment for sustainability and efficiency

As the project progresses, the cooperation between NIRAS and STI remains crucial to its success. It is about building a shared vision for a sustainable future. Both sides are committed to creating a system that minimises environmental impact while providing high-quality, healthy fish to consumers.

In conclusion, the partnership between NIRAS and Smart Tech Industry demonstrates what can be accomplished through innovation and collaboration. Together, we are enhancing aquaculture in Ukraine, setting new standards for sustainability and technological advancement.
