Helping Ukrainians in the Affected Areas Is a Priority for the Ukrainian Red Cross

March marks World Water Day, which reminds us of the importance of conserving and rationally using water resources. Since 2023, the Ukrainian Red Cross has been implementing the Access to Safe Water project.

After the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by Russia, there were problems with water supply and the lack of conditions to meet hygiene needs. The Ukrainian Red Cross, in coordination with the state, started working in the regions to support communities and people. For many years, the Kakhovka Reservoir was the only source of water for the nearby settlements.

Water is a basic human need, and it is hard to imagine life without clean, usable water. And now people are forced to buy water, bring it from other regions, or simply wait for help from philanthropists.  That's why the Ukrainian Red Cross Access to Safe Water project is important, as we have a task to improve people's living conditions and help them get access to water.

In cooperation with partners and other national Red Cross societies, the Ukrainian Red Cross purchased and distributed to communities and regional organisations where infrastructure was destroyed:

  • 16 mobile water treatment stations with a capacity of up to 1,500 litres of water per hour
  • 100 portable water treatment stations with a capacity of up to 300 litres of water per hour
  • 50 sets of equipment (pumps, taps, pipes, fittings, automation) to upgrade water pipes and wells
  • hundreds of water tanks with a capacity of 1000 litres
  • 4 mobile bath and laundry complexes
  • over 25,000 litres of bottled drinking water

Over 12 million Ukrainians have already received assistance since the start of the full-scale war. This has been made possible thanks to the joint efforts of humanitarian and charitable organisations, businesses and donations from people around the world. Thanks to coordination with the state and local authorities, we know what communities need and have an action plan to overcome the biggest humanitarian crisis in our country's history. We are grateful to our partners for supporting such powerful and important projects that help provide clean water to the population!

Today, we are mobilising resources to support Ukrainians, and everyone can join in to support our programmes and projects!
