INTEGRITES Helped a Veteran Achieve Revision of the Military Medical Commission’s Conclusion in a Pre-Trial Procedure

The INTEGRITES Military Law team successfully secured a revision of the Military Medical Commission’s (MMC) conclusion in favour of a Ukrainian veteran without the need for court proceedings.

The former serviceman voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 and continued his service despite having type 1 diabetes. In January 2023, while performing a combat mission near Bakhmut, he sustained a mine-blast injury during shelling. For several days, he remained in field conditions under semi-encirclement, without evacuation, adequate medical care or access to insulin. This led to a severe deterioration of his health and progression of the disease into a critical stage.

After a long course of treatment, the veteran underwent an MMC examination, which mistakenly classified his diagnosis as a consequence of military service rather than direct participation in the defense of Ukraine. As a result, he was deprived of proper legal status and a significant part of state-guaranteed benefits.

INTEGRITES lawyers prepared a comprehensive appeal to the Central Military Medical Commission, which, upon review, acknowledged the previous conclusion as incorrect. The new decision paved the way for the veteran to obtain the appropriate status and state-guaranteed benefits.

The team that provided this pro bono assistance to the veteran consisted of Partner Oleksandr Onishchenko, Senior Associate Mykola Yerema, Junior Associate Viktoriia Bondar and Paralegal Denys Boichuk.
