Cooperation Between the Ukrainian Red Cross and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine: Supporting Veterans Together

Returning to civilian life is not just a new stage, but a real challenge for many veterans. They face numerous challenges that they often have to overcome alone. That is why today, more than ever, it is important to implement systematic support for veterans and their families, which will not only last for years, but will also provide comprehensive assistance in various aspects.

The Ukrainian Red Cross is actively implementing programmes aimed at providing information and psychological support to veterans and their families, as well as their professional adaptation. An important step was the opening of a new modern building of the UNBROKEN rehabilitation centre in Lviv. This is a spacious, 7-storey, 4000 square metre facility offering 54 beds and advanced equipment for the rehabilitation of veterans with serious injuries. It uses state-of-the-art equipment, such as the Walkbot robotic walking system, exoskeletons and robotic gloves, and has created models of an apartment and a shop to help patients adapt to independent living.

At the same time, nine mobile rehabilitation teams are already operating in five regions of Ukraine to help veterans. This allows them to reach those in need of support directly in their communities.

In April 2024, a joint initiative of the Ukrainian Red Cross and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, the Single Veteran Line, was launched. This service provides information and psychological support to veterans and their families, handling 250 to 350 calls a day.

The Ukrainian Red Cross plans to implement a pilot project introducing the institution of a veteran's assistant to help ease the transition from military service to civilian life. We also plan to expand our capacities in key areas of veteran policy to improve the quality of services for our defenders and their families.

We are always looking for new partners to implement even more new projects. To get involved, please contact us at o.oryshchenko@redcross.org.ua.
