AVELLUM acted as the Ukrainian legal counsel to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (“EBRD”) in connection with a senior secured loan of up to EUR2.5 million to Private Higher Educational Establishment “Kyiv Medical University” (“KMU”).
Funds from the EBRD loan will be utilised to complete the establishment of a new campus for KMU’s students in Poland. The project involves the refurbishment of the two recently acquired buildings in Poland and the acquisition of new equipment. Upon completion, the Polish campus will have the capacity to host over 2000 Ukrainian and international students and provide more than 200 work placements.
KMU is one of the largest private medical universities in Ukraine offering educational programmes in general medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Despite the challenges posed by the Russian invasion, which resulted in a decline in international student numbers and KMU’s revenues, this project will enable the university to maintain its educational services while ensuring quality and safety for its students.
EBRD remains the leading international financial investor in Ukraine. To date, it has provided financing across 570 projects in the country, including the deployment of EUR4 billion since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
AVELLUM team working on the project was led by senior partner Glib Bondar with support from senior associate Mariana Veremchuk, associate Yaroslav Pavliuk and junior associates Andrii Kroshko and Olha Harhola.
