The morning of July 8, 2024, became one of the most terrible for Ukrainians in recent times - the unique complex of the Okhmatdyt Children's Specialized Hospital came under a rocket attack. It affected the children who had already suffered from terrible illnesses.
The Ukrainian Red Cross started acting immediately: our emergency response teams arrived at the site of the missile strike in the first minutes after the attack, provided first aid and psychological support to the victims, brought water, and evacuated the wounded and children connected to intensive care equipment. The rescue operation is over, and now it is only the beginning of the restoration of the medical complex.
For many years, Okhmatdyt has brought together the best doctors, modern practices, and the latest equipment. Oncology, heart disease, complex traumas, and congenital pathologies - every year, doctors saved thousands of children, and tens of thousands of kids got a chance for a new, healthy life.
There is no alternative in Ukraine, yet many of the children would never survive transportation abroad for treatment. That is why we must restore Okhmatdyt! With the support of international partners, we have already allocated USD 1 million. The Ukrainian Red Cross team will be directly involved in rebuilding the hospital complex and supporting the victims of the attack. We are implementing the project in cooperation and coordination with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Okhmatdyt itself and the Center for Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
There is a lengthy restoration of the hospital complex ahead of us, and we need support to make it happen as soon as possible. The little patients are already waiting for the unique therapy, and we can provide it for them in their homeland only by joining our efforts!
