Policy Progress: The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Established Working Group on Dairy Products Falsification
On December 11, experts of the Chamber Member Companies participated in the first meeting of the Working Group on Dairy Products Falsification (hereinafter – the Working Group) under the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine headed by Olga Trofimtseva, Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine for European Integration. The Working Group was established in response to the Chamber Position Paper raising awareness on the current situation on the dairy market of Ukraine, which is critical due to widespread falsification of dairy products, and requesting to undertake immediate measures for solving the issue.
High prevalence of falsified dairy products on the local markets leads not only to negative effect on consumers’ health and interests, but also on investment attractiveness of milk industry as well as creates negative business climate and non-competitive market conditions for responsible business.
To minimize a market share of falsified dairy products as well as to establish a mechanism of prevention, detection and prosecution of such falsification the respective amendments to legislation (related to improving control mechanism and strengthening the responsibility for violation in the sphere) should be done.
Taking into account the complexity and importance of the issue, the representatives of responsible state authorities, such as the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine, National Police of Ukraine, areengaged in the Working Group’s activities.
The Chamber has been paying the attention of various state authorities to this important issue, and therefore welcomes such a significant step towards combating dairy falsification.
