American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine donates $ 30,000 to UNICEF for the purchase of children's hospital rapid diagnostics equipment
18 October 2017 KYIV. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) with donor support of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine has provided the National Children's Hospital Ohmatdyt with the latest medical equipment GeneXpert (Manufacturer: Cepheid Inc., USA) for the rapid diagnostics of tuberculosis, HIV and viral hepatitis. The funds ($ 30,000) for the equipment were donated by Chamber Member Companies during charity events organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine.
“Every year the American Chamber of Commerce organizes charity events, during which our Member Companies have an opportunity to donate to support good deeds. Today we see the result – thanks to the efforts of representatives of socially responsible business, the equipment for rapid diagnostics of tuberculosis was donated to the National Children's Hospital Ohmatdyt. I am grateful to all Chamber Members for their contribution and believe that this will serve as an example for the more active implementation of social charity initiatives in Ukraine”, commented Andy Hunder, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine.
Taking into account the spread of the tuberculosis epidemic in Ukraine, the availability of this equipment will allow to accurately determine the active tuberculosis process of children within few hours and start treatment as soon as possible. Particularly, it will help children with immunodeficiency and positive HIV status, because in such cases the diagnostics of tuberculosis is very complicated.
“We are observing an increase of such infections as tuberculosis and hepatitis among the hospitalized patients, in particular HIV-infected children. Thanks to the new equipment, diagnosing these infections requires only 2- 2.5 hours which is crucial for a timely and effective treatment“, highlighted Irina Sadoviak, Chief Doctor of the National Children's Hospital Ohmatdyt
It is planned that over a year, using this equipment, Ohmatdyt will examine more than 400 children for tuberculosis. It should be noted that with the help of GeneXper and donated supplies, about 2,000 tests per year can be conducted, which will ensure the existing needs of the Ohmatdyt hospital in the next 12 months.
“UNICEF strongly believes in the power of partnerships and collaborative efforts. We hope this equipment, provided with support of the Chamber, will ensure faster diagnostics and better medical care for children. We are looking forward to extend the already well established collaboration with the national hospital Okhmadyt and support both scientific development and capacity of the health professionals in coming years“, summarized Giovanna Barberis, UNICEF Representative in Ukraine.
